Titled “What Flows Beneath Us,” this mural traces the journey of Rio Tinto since 1873 - from its origins to its pioneering role in the global mining industry. The work highlights distinctive elements that reflect the company’s diverse landscape of operations and materials.
By incorporating sand and traditional Indian crafts such as Dhokra casting and Indian miniature painting, the mural honors the heritage of the land while connecting to India’s long artistic legacy. Each boulder within the composition represents different regions of operation—from Australia’s East Kimberley to Mongolia—showcasing Rio Tinto’s wide-ranging resources and ventures, from diamonds to lithium.
Together, these elements present multiple perspectives shaped through conversations between AKFD Studio and Rio Tinto, reflecting a shared commitment to innovation, collaboration, and cultural diversity.
