Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport

With design guidelines from Incubis Consultants, AKFD Projects executed the design, manufacturing, and installation for Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

The airport reflects the vibrant spirit of Gujarat - enterprising, joyful, and distinct. The installations draw from this energy, featuring massive dancing figures, flying merchants, and ceilings adorned with abstracted toran motifs. Echoing the region’s ancient legacy, large planters are embellished with the still-undeciphered Indus Valley script, bringing history into a contemporary setting.

Hulchul Wall

Spanning nearly 18 metres in length, this installation captures Ahmedabad’s historic façades and everyday movement as a continuous cityscape. The illustration unfolds like a slow panorama of the old neighbourhoods - where figures, elevations, and moments of pause echo the rhythm of how the city is navigated and lived.

Installed along the Immigration Arrival corridor, the artwork is composed in four distinct layers. A birch ply base is overlaid with indigo Ajrak textile, followed by white powder-coated stainless steel building frames.

The installation features four illuminated Corian figures, each enclosed within a box and detailed with black resin inlays. These reveal underlying Ajrak motifs, adding texture, depth, and character to the artwork.

Toran

Referencing the Gujarati toran, a welcoming ornament placed above doorways, this ceiling installation stretches over 17 metres in length and nearly 5 metres in width, formed in brass-finished metal sheets arranged in a rhythmic, suspended pattern. It establishes a continuous visual threshold through the Immigration Arrival zone.

Aangan Van Planters

Inspired by the Harappan civilisation, this illustration integrates motifs of animals, tools, vessels, stylised flora, and geometric symbols. These elements come together as a continuous landscape, forming the conceptual base of the Angana-Van Planters.

A total of nine carved planters, each measuring 2.61 metres in diameter and 1.56 metres in height, are placed across the Immigration Hall and forecourt. Carved in sandstone and clad over a metal framework, they feature integrated rim lighting that accentuates their form and detailing.

Motifs of animals, cultivated forms, and early symbols come together to evoke the region’s ancient landscape, serving as a subtle yet meaningful anchor on each planter. Elements of growth and cultivation are arranged in a centered composition, suggesting shared ground and creating a subtle focal point on the planter.

Utsav Wall

Spanning 109.53 by 6.72 metres, Utsav Wall is realized as a metal installation finished in copper and brass tones. Each figure, averaging 4 metres in height, is shaped as a gesture in motion, catching light as it moves along the terminal wall. Viewed across the hall, the silhouettes come together in a sweeping choreography, forming a continuous procession scaled to the architecture.
